Democratic Leader to Present Smoking Ban Compromise

The Democratic leader in the state Senate says a compromise agreement is possible on a statewide smoking ban. Senator Bob Mellow says his proposal would allow municipalities which had already passed smoking bans to re-enact the same statute, as long as it's no stricter than it was in its original form.

Members of a House/Senate conference committee have been trying to resolve differences in two separate bills, which contain language that could negate local no-smoking bills already on the books. Mellow says he will present his proposal when the committee next meets on June 3rd.
